CUTENESS ALERT: Update on Zoo’s Rescued Brown Bear Cub

SEATTLE—Woodland Park Zoo’s new brown bear cub is beating the heat with an ice treat in a kiddie pool! The female cub was recently rescued from Anchorage, Alaska where she was found without her mom. The zoo, who has the expertise and facility, is providing a permanent home for her.

The cub, who remains nameless and is 6 months old, is temporarily living off public view while she settles in. She’s learning her new routine well and learning the cues from the bear keepers. She’s currently eating protein, kibble, greens, an assortment of fruits and veggies and formula from a bowl. As she grows, she’ll be transitioned off formula and to a seasonal diet. She currently weighs approximately 100 pounds.

Stay tuned for more updates on the cub at: www.zoo.org/brownbear

Furry Nice To Meet You! Adorable Brown Bear Cub Being Handraised At Port Lympne Reserve

Kent, July 2022 – Port Lympne Reserve in Kent has welcomed a cuddly new addition to its 800-plus animals: an adorable European brown bear cub!

The delightful little newborn arrived on 21st January in the park’s custom-built, three-acre enclosure. Unfortunately, the bear cub was rejected by his mother not long after birth, weighing less than 9kg.

Port Lympne’s dedicated carnivore care team stepped in and collectively became the baby’s new family, naming him Boki.

Two South African Porcupettes, The Largest Subspecies, Arrive At Bioparc Fuengirola

About 20 cm long and 300 grams in weight, this is the size of the two South African porcupine pups that have arrived at Bioparc Fuengirola. These little ones were born early July at BIOPARC Valencia. Their mother was not prepared to raise them, something quite common in the first births of this species; an inexperience that leads to abandonment and that, on occasion, can cause the death of newborns.

A Female Aardvark Has Given Birth At Prague Zoo

An aardvark pup was born at the Prague Zoo on Sunday July 10 just after nine o'clock in the morning. The now two-week-old pup drinks breast milk from its mother Kvída. According to keepers, it is active. At birth, the pup weighed 1,450 grams and measured 54 cm in length, which is a reasonable birth weight and size for aardvarks.

"We welcomed the little rascal into the world on Sunday at 9.12, the birth went quickly, the cub got its first drink from its mother at noon and now tries to drink every one to two hours. We don't know its gender yet, it will only be revealed by DNA analysis of hair samples," says Zoo director Miroslav Bobek, who is happy about the new addition.

Long-tailed Chinchilla Pups!

Congratulations to Charley, one of Trevor Zoo’s long-tailed chinchillas. On June 25, she gave birth to two male babies. Waffles is their father. Trevor Zoo is in Millbrook, NY. The Trevor Zoo is an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited facility which provides Millbrook students a unique opportunity to work directly with wildlife. The zoo has a collection of more than 180 individual animals representing 80 species, ten of which are endangered, and participates in numerous Species Survival Plan (SSP) programs. Zoo community service students (zooies) are assigned to teams where they rotate through the zoo during the year to get a broad-based view of the zoo in its entirety. This encourages students to have a variety of experiences in animal husbandry, diet preparation, and veterinary medicine. Students who show exemplary work and passion are selected to be leaders, called student curators, and assist in training and working with their peers. Student curators and zooies assist zoo staff with all levels of caring for the animals at the Trevor Zoo. This is truly a one-of-a-kind opportunity and can be an extremely rewarding experience.

Brookfield Zoo’s 2-Month-Old South American Tapir Calf Now Outdoors

Brookfield, Ill. — Guests visiting Brookfield Zoo can now see a South American tapir calf, who turned 2 months old on July 22, in his outdoor habitat, located on the north side of Pachyderm House. While getting acclimated to his new surroundings, he, and his mother Sorghum (SOAR-gum) also will have access to their indoor space.

One characteristic that zoogoers will notice are the calf’s white stripes that serve as an excellent camouflage. Baby tapirs are born with the stripes, which will begin to fade in a few months, and are completely gone by 6 months of age. Currently, the male calf weighs approximately 70 pounds. He will reach full size at about 18 months of age and could weigh as much as 500 pounds.
