About two weeks ago, four capybaras were born at Schönbrunn Zoo in Austria. For the two parents, it is the first joint offspring. "The young capybaras still spend the day mainly sleeping and drinking milk – but they also eat some hay. They are precocial, which means that the young animals are already so developed at birth that they can follow the parents independently. Above all, they enjoy the warm weather and from time to time dare to bathe in the water together with the adult animals," reports animal keeper Alexander Keller.

Cub takes first steps outside at Pepper Family Wildlife Center, Visible to the Public Beginning Today

CHICAGO (May 28, 2022) – Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, the African lion cub at Lincoln Park Zoo made his debut at Pepper Family Wildlife Center!

Pilipili (pee-lee-pee-lee), which means 'pepper' in Swahili, explored the outdoor habitat alongside mom Zari (Zar-ee), dad Jabari (jah-bar-ee), while "aunts" Cleo and Hasira remained behind-the-scenes.

Sumatran tiger, Lola, is pregnant, expected to give birth this summer. OKC Zoo participates in AZA breeding program for this critically endangered species to ensure its survival as there are less than 500 Sumatran tigers in the wild.

The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden is proud to announce that its female Sumatran tiger, Lola, 10, is pregnant and due to give birth this summer. The OKC Zoo participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan® (SSP) for Sumatran tigers which made the recommendation for Lola to breed with mate, Kami, 14. The Zoo is committed to helping protect Sumatran tigers and sustain their population through its participation in the AZA’s SSP for this critically endangered species. This is Lola’s second pregnancy with Kami. The pair welcomed male triplets in July 2017.

Three Pups Fostered with Pack in New Mexico to Help Wild Mexican Wolf Population

Brookfield, Ill. — The Chicago Zoological Society (CZS), which manages Brookfield Zoo, is thrilled to announce the birth of five Mexican wolves. The litter was born on April 26 to 3-year-old Vivilette. Two of the month-old male pups have begun to venture out of their den to explore their surroundings at the zoo’s Regenstein Wolf Woods habitat, while their three siblings were released to the wild as part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) Mexican Wolf Recovery Plan.

To enhance the genetic diversity of the wild population, USFWS recommended three of the pups from Brookfield Zoo’s litter become part of the fostering program. On May 5, a Chicago Zoological Society senior veterinary technician and lead animal care specialist accompanied the 10-day-old pups—two males and one female—on a flight to New Mexico, courtesy of LightHawk Conservation Flying, a nonprofit organization that partners pilots with organizations to help transfer endangered species to new homes among other conservation projects. The pups were then successfully placed in the den of the Whitewater Canyon wolf pack by the Mexican Wolf Interagency Field Team.

Kent, 26th May 2022 - Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve is celebrating the arrival of three beautiful baby white-belted ruffed lemurs, one of the world’s most endangered primates.

Born on the 19th April 2022 to mum Ikala and dad Mino, the wide-eyed youngsters, a little boy and two girls, are quite vocal, developing very fast, and are already climbing around and testing mum and dad’s patience.

We love watching 1-year-old Maisie and male chimp Alex play and interact at Maryland Zoo in Baltimore.

The Sand Cats at the Zoological Center Ramat Gan are 2 year old Sabbhia and 4 year old Marib. They arrived at the zoo almost 2 years ago from France and Sweden respectively.

Officials were hoping for successful breeding of the couple, as Sand cats are not only an amazing little cat, it is also a native Israeli species that was once living in the Arava Valley in the south of Israel and went extinct. 

In the first weeks the couple kept their distance, but as time went by, the bond between them was getting tighter.

Brookfield, Ill. — The Chicago Zoological Society, which manages Brookfield Zoo, is happy to announce the birth of a male South American tapir calf on May 22.  Beginning, May 26, zoogoers will be able to see 11-year-old mom Sorghum (pronounced SOAR-gum) and her yet-to-be-named calf indoors at the Pachyderm House. Once the weather warms a little, they will have access to their outdoor habitat, located on the north side of the building.

Following a 13-month gestation, Sorghum gave birth to the approximately 20-pound calf. Throughout her pregnancy, the zoo’s veterinary staff was able to monitor the fetus with regular ultrasounds. To accomplish this voluntary behavior from Sorghum, animal care specialists used positive reinforcement to desensitize the 550-pound mother-to-be to the sound of the ultrasound machine, the smell of rubbing alcohol and gel used on the ultrasound probe, and the feeling of the probe on her belly.

SAN DIEGO (May 20, 2022) – The San Diego Zoo celebrated another milestone as wildlife care staff welcomed the birth of a rare male golden takin—the second of this takin subspecies to be born in the Western Hemisphere and the first male. The takin calf, named Jin Tong (pronounced jean tong), and means Golden boy in Mandarin Chinese, was born on March 21 to mom, Bona. The Zoo’s wildlife care specialists performed a comprehensive first exam and confirmed Jin Tong is doing well and adjusting to life within the herd.
