Kaja Update

Kaja and Indah, San Diego Zoo's Orangutan Son and Mom, had their best interaction yet this week, spending over two hours together. The two have "intro" sessions every day under supervision where Indah has shown all the appropriate signs of care except for nursing. Wildlife Care Specialist are unsure if Indah recognizes Kaja has her own, but her interactions with him are gentle and careful.

Kaja gets stronger every day and is now able to hold himself sitting up! As he develops his strength, Wildlife Care Specialists wear shirts that mimic Indah's hair for him to hold onto. He currently weighs 3165 grams (roughly 7 pounds) and is fed six times per day. Kaja will remain off habitat for the foreseeable future as he and Indah continue to develop their relationship.

Hand-raising A Humboldt Penguin Chick

Brookfield, Ill. —A month-old Humboldt penguin chick, who hatched at Brookfield Zoo on February 2, is growing by leaps and bounds. The chick is only the second successful offspring for parents—14-year-old Divot and 21-year-old Rosy—making its hatching extremely significant to the Humboldt penguin population in Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) accredited North American institutions.

Sichuan takin are a rare species, considered vulnerable to extinction. They’re native to the same Himalayan forests as giant pandas and are well-adapted to cold and high altitudes. Sichuan takin babies, like many hoofed animals, get up and nurse within an hour or two of being born, and it doesn’t take them long to start climbing on rocks and playing.

Zookeepers, Vets Rally To Save Rare Bontebok Calf

A rare African antelope that almost didn’t live past its first few days is now a month old and well on the road to recovery at the Oregon Zoo.

Keepers were thrilled when 7-year-old bontebok Winter gave birth to a new calf Feb. 2. Bonteboks were once considered among the most imperiled mammals on the planet, and each birth is an important step toward ensuring their long-term survival.

Excitement quickly turned to concern though, when keepers saw that Winter, an inexperienced bontebok mom, was not nursing her newborn.
