Infant Chimp Takes To The Community Like a Duck To Water
March 16, 2022
ZooBorns readers know ZOOM Erlebniswelt Gelsenkirchen has had quite a roster of new babies born lately. On the 25th of February, in the early hours of the morning, chimp Jahaga gave birth to a baby as well! Mother and child are doing well. Little one clings to mother Jahaga's tummy and is being taken good care of by her.
TONS OF PICS BELOW THE FOLD!
The baby chimp is doing fine. The bond between the mother and her offspring is very close, as with all great apes. After just under eight months of pregnancy, typically a single infant is born. The babies are fully dependent on the mother for care. In the first few weeks of life, the females carry their offspring on their stomachs, then on their backs. Chimpanzee babies are nursed for four to five years.
The other chimps respond with curiosity to the new member of the group. Most excited are the other juveniles Dayo (almost 7) and Kojo (4).
The gender of the baby has been determined: It's a male!
Animal carers from adventure world Africa have named the little one Lisoko.
